  Mid-Autumn Festival

The usually quiet concourse burst into activities tonight as the new JCRC welcomes the first event into the academic year. The Mid-Autumn Festival has been a much celebrated event in Hall 6 as it is a time when everyone gathers as a big family. The freshmen were especially excited with hanging out with their new found friends whilst seniors are comfortable relishing in the cool air, great show and company.

Residents settled themselves down comfortably at a good time which brought the event into a 'high' at the start of the event. Although the haze masked the brightness of the full moon, it did nothing to reduce the brilliance of our Hall 6 Jam band. The brand new team wasted no time to rock the grounds of our hall with their explosive music. And without our veteran running the show, it seems that the team is exploring other genres of music uncommon for the last few years.

The jamming started with Alvin singing Franz Ferdinand's 'Take me out' It has a catchy tune but is challenging to grasp. However, he managed to pull it off with the audience tapping to the beat. Lauren, our only female singer for the night, sang 'ydia'and 'Sweet child o'mine' Although it was shaky at first coupled with a few technical glitches, Lauren overcame that and let her potential shine beautifully. Our Hall King, Anselm was next and with his bag of emotions, he bowled the audience over with his rendition of '海阔天空'

What is celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival without 'ating games' The first game requires 12 people grouped into 4 to peel the traditional fruit pomelo commonly eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The group to finish first wins. Randolph and his band of muscular brothers ripped the fruit and gobble it up in a flash. The next game is a combination of good food and love. 4 couples were called up to the test of their hunger for each other, or rather, hunger for mooncakes. Daniel and Shu-yi, the golden couple in Hall 6, won the other teams hands down.

The highly awaited dance segment by Akin Dance Studio brought super seniors back just to catch a glimpse of their glamour. Everyone else was also excited to see the boys display their sleek moves. Led by Yao Hui, also know as Akin, with Chee Lip, Alex and Chuan Kai, they grooved to the sounds of different hip hop tunes weaved together. They executed extremely difficult stunts that revealed their expertise and experience in hip hop dancing. Although they felt that they did not do a good job, it was a good attempt to challenge greater heights. The audience was also undeniably entertained. Hopefully Akin Dance Studio will still continue to perfect their moves and impress Hall 6 in their next performance.

Up till now, the atmosphere of the event was kept at a high partly because Hall 6 has new found talents in speaking. The Net Radio Deejays, more commonly known as NJs made good emcees by educating on the meaning of the Mid-Autumn Festival, telling lame jokes and engaging the audience in the different segments. Throughout they also mentioned that a mythological figure, Chang Er is coming to Hall 6 to pay us a visit.

After sitting for more than an hour, it is finally time to do a little exercise. It was a heart-warming scene when everyone crowd in their little groups to light up the lanterns given to them. Little flames of light were passed on and slowly but surely, all the lanterns were lighted up, making the concourse a delightful sight. Everyone then formed a long line, and holding their lanterns started walking towards Block 32 then Block 33 before making a turn at the car park and down to the pond area. The walk was filled with small talks, friendly shoves, protecting the flame in the lantern and posing for the camera. Romance, friendship and laughter surrounds all who were there.

At the pond, everyone was given a bottle of bubbles each and a piece of colour paper. We then settle ourselves down comfortably, playing with the bubbles and also teaching each other how to make paper boats. More candles were then lighted up and were released together with the paper boats into the pond. It was exciting to see our little boats of life floating on the landmark of Hall 6. While we were busy with our little art class, Chang Er appeared. And boy, was it a splashing arrival. Armed with toilet paper wrapped around his arms and body, the emcee for the night, Mike ran down from the top of the slope straight into the pond. Everyone was wide-eyed at the sacrifice he made but apparently 'hang Er' as quite an anti-climax as people put that sudden appearance behind their minds and went back to the little playthings.

The gathering by the pond come to an end after a group photo and everyone then proceeded to enjoy the hall supper beside the reading room. It was a lovely evening and thanks to the Social Committee for putting in the effort to make spending Mid-Autumn Festival in Hall 6 a special one.
